Cleaning Product Dilution Calculator
Calculate exact dilution ratios for cleaning products. Convert 1:10, 1:20, or custom ratios to precise amounts of concentrate and water needed.
Enter the total amount of diluted solution you want to make
How This Tool Works
This calculator determines the exact amounts of cleaning concentrate and water needed to create a diluted solution at your desired ratio. The tool uses the ratio formula: if the ratio is 1:10, that means 1 part concentrate for every 10 parts water, for a total of 11 parts.
The calculator divides your total desired amount proportionally based on the ratio. For example, for 1000mL at 1:10 ratio, you get approximately 91mL concentrate and 909mL water (totaling 1000mL).
Formula
The calculation is based on:
Total Parts = Concentrate Part + Water PartConcentrate = Total Amount × (Concentrate Part ÷ Total Parts)Water = Total Amount × (Water Part ÷ Total Parts)
Example: 1000mL total at 1:10 ratio:
Total Parts = 1 + 10 = 11Concentrate = 1000 × (1 ÷ 11) = 90.9mLWater = 1000 × (10 ÷ 11) = 909.1mL
Common Dilution Ratios
- 1:10: Standard all-purpose cleaning, general disinfecting
- 1:20: Light cleaning, maintenance cleaning, daily use
- 1:30: Very light cleaning, delicate surfaces
- 1:50: Heavy disinfection, sanitizing
- 1:100: Very heavy dilution, large area cleaning
Safety Tips
- Always read and follow product label instructions
- Wear appropriate protective equipment (gloves, eye protection) when handling concentrates
- Work in a well-ventilated area
- Store diluted solutions in clearly labeled containers
- Keep cleaning products away from children and pets
- Never mix different cleaning products unless specified by the manufacturer
FAQ
- What does a 1:10 ratio mean?A 1:10 ratio means 1 part concentrate to 10 parts water. For example, if you want 1000mL total solution, you need 91mL concentrate and 909mL water. The ratio is always concentrate:water.
- How do I measure the concentrate accurately?Use a measuring cup or graduated cylinder for accuracy. For small amounts, use a syringe or pipette. Always measure by volume (mL) unless the product instructions specify weight. Clean measuring tools between uses.
- Can I use this for any cleaning product?Yes, this calculator works for any cleaning product that requires dilution. Common products include all-purpose cleaners, disinfectants, floor cleaners, and degreasers. Always check the product label for recommended ratios.
- What if my product uses a different ratio?Use the "Custom Ratio" option to enter any ratio you need. Enter the concentrate part and water part separately. The calculator will work with any ratio, including decimals like 1:15.5.
- Should I add water to concentrate or concentrate to water?Always add concentrate to water, never water to concentrate. This prevents splashing and ensures better mixing. Pour the water first, then slowly add the concentrate while stirring.
- How long does diluted solution last?Diluted cleaning solutions should be used within 24-48 hours for best effectiveness. Some products may have specific shelf life instructions. Store in a labeled container away from children and pets.
